How Do Humpback Whales Sing?
Whale HellllllloOoOoOoOo 🐋 I just finished rendering my humpback interpretive panel/magazine piece! This piece explains the theory about male humpback whale sound production. Both male and female humpback whales can vocalize, but only the males have been recorded to produce long, complex melodies, something very unique to not only to this species, but to the entire marine mammal class. Because it is difficult to physically analyze this phenomenon due to their size and agility in water, this is a theoretical model of how whales produce sound. Much research needs to be done to get more substantial information, but isn’t this so fascinating?? 🐋 |
UPDATE: When I traveled to Maui to paint a mural at the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, I met a researcher who studies humpback whale sounds and observes the interactions between these mystic creatures. What a coincidence! 🐋
Marc shared his research findings with me, and I have updated my interpretive panel to reflect this newfound knowledge.
